Improving wireless internet reception

Occasionally am losing wireless internet connection.
The wireless router is only outside, down the hall.
It is in central position in hall at foot of stairs to reach rooms upstairs & downstairs.
Are there any things I can do or tricks to improve wireless reception ?
Is there a better router I could use with better/more powerful wireless signal ?

Try putting a tin can on end of router aerial (should amplify more)0

the higher you have it in the hall the better (off the floor)0
