i think this is a valid excuse
Their response would/should be "why not use £1 of the £250 interest and fee-free overdraft facility we kindly gave you to open up a 'fee waiving qualifying product' savings account?"

In other words, try again! ;)

Two other posters already have pointed out that all the conditions say is that if one isn't happy banking with first direct, then they will pay £100. I can't see anywhere where it states that one has to have a good reason, or one has to have reached the state of unhappiness for rational reasons.

You've quoted me, yet I wasn't the one that said, specifically, that you needed a "good reason". Anyway...

It's a service guarantee. If you're not happy with the service you can invoke the guarantee and claim the £100.

Saying you've changed your mind about thinking £10 was value for money, or that their savings rates are (still) poor, or that you're paying for phone calls, or that you don't like the layout of their website, isn't a "service" issue is it?

That's why we introduced our Service Guarantee: we're so certain that our service is better than anyone else's, if you're not happy banking with first direct after six months, we'll help you move to any bank you like and give you £100 for your trouble.

    Hi,

My mother opened up a FD account in Nov. I introduced her to FD and I had the £50 for recommending a friend + she had £100 joining incentive. She has been crediting £1500 every month - its not on a set but during the calendar month. After the 6th month she can use a switching service and transfer all DDs to Halifax.

She has been with Halifax for long and happy with it. FD account was just opened up to get joining and leaving incentive. Their is nothing on their website to state a "good" reason has to be provided.

So will use switching service in June (It will be 7th month) by that time and send them a letter requesting closure of ALL the account + £100.

I don't see a reason why I should not work?

So did FD have a special promotion about the £50 incentive for recommending a friend or did you request this?

Also, keep us informed about the closure request and how you get on...hearing mixed stories about FD not paying up, some people are not clearly mentioning the incentive when leaving, some people are not providing a reason at all, so dont know what to expect?

£50 recommend a friend cards was sent to me by FD. I did not request them.

OK will update in June/July time.

What will be the best reason for leaving? I have been with FD for the last 15 years now and do find them excellent.

Pick any genuine reason? Poor interest rate, antiquated internet banking.
As long as you close you FD accounts they will pay it.

they wont pay you after 15 years. its after 6 months of account opening and within 12 months of having the account, so basically between 6-12 months and ensure you deposit 1.5k or 1k now for atleast 6 months otherwise they have the right not to pay you for leaving according to earlier posts.

but you should be able to do it with your mums account? depending upon when you opened it and how long its been.
