Logo Design, please help :-)

Hi all,
I have recently set up a business which comprises both an internet based shop as well as a real shop. I designed my own logo to use on letterheads and the website etc etc and I also need to be able to print small labels myself with the logo on. I also want a printer to make me a sign for the shop.
The logo I did myself is exactly what I want but was just knocked together in MS Paint so is not great quality when resized.
I read on here somewhere that what I needed was a vector format logo. So I paid a seller on ebay to design one for me. Before I did so I asked him would I be able to do the above and he said yes. However, now he has redone it and sent it to me in EPS, PDF, JPEG formats. He says the EPS is a vector one, is that correct? And the JPEG image is massive and will not fit on my labels so he redid it for me. It still won't work though, my own logo looks better. Think he is fed up with me now, asking him for advice :-(
So can anyone help me use the jpeg for my labels, as now he tells me I need really expensive computer programs to do anything myself! The measurements of the label jpeg he sent appear to be correct but just do not work.
Alternatively, can anyone recommend someone who can do what I need?
Thanks,
Em :-)

Is it just a resize you're after or a rehash?
I'm not particularly au-fait with MS Paint, but I would have thought you'd be able to resize images with it.
If not, have you looked at any open source (free) alternatives?

Hi Adam,
Thanks for the reply, is appreciated :-)
You can resize (which is all I really need to do) in Paint but it ends up all blurry and pixellated very easily.
Not sure what free alternatives there are and am never sure what is safe to download lol :-) Do you know of anything safe?
However, have decided to have a chat with my local printer this afternoon, if he can print the labels cheaply enough I will get him to do it for me, and if I need to pay him as well to sort the logo then I will do. Will just have to put cost of rubbish ebay logo down to experience lol!
So it may be sorted if my printer is any good.... watch this space!

Adobe Illustrator would, I suspect, be one of the "expensive programs" mentioned.
An open-source alternative is …
http://www.osalt.com/inkscape
It doesn't take long to learn the basics, and it'll save you a fortune. I was stunned by Kall-Kwik's hourly rate on the one occasion I had to use them!
If you do get stuck, let me know, as I have Illustrator.

Hi Adam,
Yes, Illustrator was one program that was mentioned.
My local printer was brill and has re-set the logo (free of charge) just as I want it for a sign :-)
However, he does not do labels so I still need to be able to print these myself. I will have a look at the website you mention and give it a try, and if (when!) I get stuck I will contact you to see if you and your Illustrator can help. The logo is very simple, just words with a few stars around them, but my computer knowledge is not great so I am finding it hard to do what I need.
Thanks for your help so far, and I will maybe give you a shout if I get stuck, if you don't mind :-)
Cheers,

Em,
I am in the printing game and would be happy to assist you should you wish
Illustrator is indeed a very good programme, but an original is v v expensive
I cannot post my website address or email on here, but if you either take a look at my profile and email me from there or pm me i would be more than happy to help you out
Regards
Pete0
