It may have been reported but the fact that the Cypriots were told to confiscate the load by the Americans who then walked away from it is the real story that was never reported
That isn't what I heard. Both us, the British, and the US both offered help to make the explosives safe. The Cypriot government chose to decline the offers of help.0 -

Very interested to see links for this - I have been following the inquiry/trial currently going on in Cyprus and this has not been mentioned
If what you say is true then the guys on trial need to be shot!0 -

There is a bit more to it than that,The Cypriot government had declined offers from Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States to remove or dispose of the material, having feared an adverse reaction from Syria.[5] The government had instead requested that the UN effect the removal, but claimed that its request had been rejected
Admittedly, this is Wiki but it backs up what I read from a multitude of other sources at the time. I was particularly interested in the story because I was in Cyprus the day after the bang.

Fair play so why did the UN reject it0 -

If they did. Maybe they were also worried about the reaction from Syria.
Regardless of the offers of help, some idiot decided to store a ship load of explosives next to the main power plant on the island. If they had been kept in a controlled environment this may not have been so stupid but they weren't, they were kept in unventilated shipping containers under the sub-tropical sun.0 -

The information in Wiki comes from a Cyprus Mail report reproduced here:-

It does appear that the Cypriot minister of defence was convinced that "the material is completely safe, there is no risk", and thus no action was necessary.

I heard from a very reliable source that there MAY BE a 'special levy' implemented in Greece - of between 6 and 10% and that is across the board - meaning even those below 100,000 Euros
Lets see.....0
