Withdraw the cash, leaving a nil balance.

Send a recorded letter to the account holding branch or Halifax admin centre or Bank of Scotland plc at The Mound, Edinburgh instructing them to close the account immediately as per relevant T&Cs and request confirmation.

Wait for 7 - 10 days - if account not closed, raise a complaint.

    End of Story.
Was going to suggest that, but thought it may show the OP in a bad light to Halifax? After all, the primary objective seems to be to sever the link, not share the money up.

At the moment she can demonstrate (to a certain extent) that no 'dispute' exists because she knows she could get the money but hasn't.

Unless we haven't been given the full picture?

Not avoiding the question of what account it is, just had it for years and have dd ect taken out of it and my child benefit paid in, he has a seperate account to this to have his wages paid into an i think this may be halifax also,

Just want to totally rid him from my life and get on with mine.
  • Well open a new account with Halifax (or anyone else) move the d/d across and advise DWP to pay money to new account - simples.

Abandoning a joint account never is a good idea. If one of the account holders overdrawns it, another account holder is jointly responsible for the debt.
Not to mention the financial link it creates and other possible problems.

Hi there is a balance of about 200 in there at the moment, no overdraft ect and yes they are aware of divorce as wanted to open another account in maiden name. They just said two signatures to close it, end of, which really doesnt help me lol.

    .

Has either of you made Halifax aware of the dispute before?

If so then you should not be able to withdraw the balance without both parties agreement....

This is done to stop one party for taking all the cash and leaving the other with nothing.

Get the forms from Halifax. Send to EX and get them to send them back.

That is a VERY bad idea as I get the impression the OP just wants rid of the joint account and the ex isn't going to cooperate.

If the account is disputed; it will be much harder for the OP to close it without the ex's consent as with the freeze it will effectively becomes a dual signing account rather than either party as now.

To re-iterate: take the balance to zero and instruct them to close it.
