motion sickness at the cinema

Ok... so here's a weird one for you... I just want to know if there is anyone else out there that experiences the same weird phenomenon as I do...
In thepast year- 18 months I have been to see 5 or 6 films in the cinema. They tend not to be massive blockbuster actions films (the last two being Reacher and Arbitrage). As soon as I walk into the theatre I start feeling queezy, get hot and clammy, and feel very restless. I just cant settle.
The first few times I thought it was because of something I had eaten was overly sugary... like to super sweet nasty icecream and milkshakes. But this last time I had nothing to eat or drink and feel got the strange sensation of feeling really icky.
It starts improving as soon as I leave the actual theatre. The first time I remember this happening is during Schindlers List (1995??) but I put that down to it being such an emotion and unsettling film
I do not have any real allergies which I react to like this. I do not get generally get travel sick. The only time I ever get motion sickness is when I am waiting on the boat after scuba diving.
So... does anyone else ever feel like this?

Man plans and God laughs...
Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry. But by demonstrating that all people cry, laugh, eat, worry and die, it introduces the idea that if we try to understand each other, we may even become friends.

My friend is a bit like that, although it's mainly with 3D type block buster movies.
Maybe it's happening because you felt ill the first time, and now get anxious about going to the cinema and expect it to happen all the time. Then the anxiety actually makes it happen.
I suppose the answer would be to go when you feel calm and relaxed, and see a film you are really looking forward to.
On the other hand, going to the cinema can be fairly annoying, due to other cinema goers, so maybe wait until the DVD comes out, and watch in the comfort of your favourite chair!Early retired - 18th December 2014

Cinemas can be very strange places - often the floors slope and this can lead to disorientation. they are dark - that can disorientate too. and as you mention.....smells of popcorn, ice cream and sugary items.
you may be developing a sensitivity to these things.
it may well be the smell as this provokes nausea quicker than most things - but the dark and sloping floor could be a factor.0 -
The popcorn stench makes me feel quite sick so I rarely go to the cinema. I took OH to see The Hobbit a few weeks back and spent most of the time feeling nauseus.. I blamed it on being 9 weeks pregnant but if i am honest I feel the same whenever we go lol.
I have an irrational fear of them bursting into flames and not being able to get out so I am usually very edgy anyway.LB moment 10/06 Debt Free date 6/6/14Hope to be debt free until the day I dieMortgage-free Wannabee (05/08/30)6/6/14 £72,454.65 (5.65% int.)08/12/2023 £33602.00 (4.81% int.)0 -
I get motion sickness if I sit to the side of the screen, especially if I'm near the front.
I'm ok in the middle though.0 -
I can't stand the cinema because of the dark. My OH likes watching TV with with all the lights out but I find it really uncomfortable. Maybe the darkness is disorientating? Do you watch TV at home with more background light maybe? xPay Debt by Xmas 16 - 0/12000

I reacted like this when I saw Dark City at the cinema - think it was all the off-90-degree angles. I fainted at one point."Save £12k in 2019" #120 - £100,699.57/£100,0000

I threw up in my popcorn bag when I saw the Blair witch project but that was because of that particular film with the camera jerking all over the place (& I'd just eaten pizza & ice cream before & read about people being sick so that didn't help) but I've never felt ill for any other film.0

My mother suffered from motion sickness during "Monsoon Wedding" - had to come out of the screening. She's the same watching any home movies- it's the camera movements.I can cook and sew, make flowers grow.0
