still a lot of o4's (running at startup) which could (if the owner doesn't want/need them running all the time), be disabled with msconfig

    youcam, qpservice, defender, HPHC_Scheduler, GoogleDesktop.exe,QTTask.exe,Reader_sl.exe,jusched.exe, AdobeARM.exe, LightScribeControlPanel.exe,WMPNSCFG.exe,HD Writer AE.lnk ,WZQKPICK.EXE

sas if you've uninstalled it has left remnants

    O20 - Winlogon Notify: !SASWinLogon - C:\Program Files\SUPERAntiSpyware\SASWINLO.DLL (file missing)

malwarebytes has also been added, you could uninstall it once you've updated it and done a full scan and cleaned anything up

    Thanks for the help Closed.

What is the best way to get rid of the remnants of SUPERAntiSpyware?

Have I drawn the right conclusion that Malwares is best removed once run and then reinstalled again if needed?

I'll have another look at the o4's but my problem is that I'm not sure what they are, hence not sure what the effect of disabling them would be i.e. if youcam is anything to do with built in webcam I wouldn't want to create problems for her when using Skype etc.

As already mentioned by loads of other members, your sticky is really helpful, especially for novices like me :)

anything disabled from startup can be run manually by clicking the icon for it or creating one if it doesn't exist

also any msconfig changes can be undone, by putting the tick back in and rebooting.

for the one sas entry, you could tick it, and fix selected using hijackthis. (it works the opposite way around to msconfig as regards ticks.)

malwarebytes isn't a big deal just adds to the log and startup slightly, you could leave it, or uninstall it.

if you're at all unsure, do a macrium backup first.

I'll try and remove the sas entry using hijackthis. With CCleaner, are you expecting the user just to use the cleaner tab or also the registry etc? Also what is best way to uninstall programs -Programs own uninstall if it has one, Windows uninstall, CCleaner uninstall or little difference?

ccleaner is mentioned just to remove temp files easily, not for registry cleaning, but you can use to uninstall in a similar way to control panel/programs.
