40kw a day, two bed apartment, seems a lot?
Hi,
I've recently moved into my sister and financ!s flat which is a new build, all electric. We have just received a bill for £500 for three months, and as two of us work full time and one full time student. I rang up thinking perhaps this was wrong, I provided an upto date meter reading as eon, although having taken our meter readings, said they hadn't taken any recently. That amount was infact wrong and we owe them an additional £300. I find this astonishing, as a student with four people who were in most of the day on their laptops, eating separately, all our bills combined was only £1000 for the whole year. We have taken a daily reading and figured we use 40+ kw a day (with only one person in the house) What I'm doing at the moment is taking daily meter readings and tomorrow I shall be turning everything but the fridge off for a few hours to see how much the clock turns over. Our flat isn't well heated as we have these rubbish plastic radiators and we do have an electric heater... will this be the cause of all this electricity!? Any help/advice would appreciated!

At £8.79pd / £61pw that's still a lot for water / heat cooking / bath & shower facilities.
Anything is possible. What :
- are exactly are these "rubbish plastic radiators"
- what is this the other "an electric heater"
- how and with what do you 'heat water'
- does anyone ever 'have a bath'
- does everyone use an 'electric shower'
- or is the shower 'immersion heater' powered
- what exactly is the name of your tariff, and what is your postal area
- which electricity company are you with
- are you cheapest tariff / e-account / direct debit / supply meter readings monthly etc
- how much % heating is used all day every day when only one person is home to benefit
Go to your online account, get your actual average kW per day use, your region code, your tariff name, and let the group know. This year the going average rate per annum for an all electric property is about £1200pa, your is running currently at £3200pa or nearly 3 times the annual average. You must take into consideration that 60% of your annual costs will be eaten up by 30% of the calendar days per annum.Disclaimer : Everything I write on this forum is my opinion. Forget other households that is irrelevant. Electricity is massively more expensive than gas for heating and hot water. Are you on an economy 7/ two rate meter, do you have storage heaters? Have you selected the cheapest supplier and tariff or stuck with the standard one?
Also forget gadgets and lighting, your energy guzzlers are heating, power showers, hot water including laundry at higher temperatures and tumble dryer. Have you set your immersion heater (hot water) to timed or is it on 24/7? Do you have a power shower, if so what is its wattage and how many minutes a day is it in use in total? How well insulated is the place, obviously double glazed but how many outside walls, are there other flats above and below?
No idea what you mean by plastic radiators: please look at pictures of storage heaters or panel heaters or other electric heaters online and let us know exactly what you have and how/ when you are using it.Declutterbug-in-progress.⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️⭐️0 -
Thanks for the replies I'll try and give you all the information I know, the plastic heaters are dimplex radiators, I don't really know much about them or how much electricity they use. The electricity heater is a 2000kw heater.
We have an electric heater for the shower which we turn on and off before and after showering, we have baths every now and again as that is a timed heater and takes like an hour to heat up.
We live in Nottingham, and are with eon and we are on energy plan
Yesterday we were out for a few hours so decided to turn everything off except the fridge and only used 1 kw, we assumed it was the electric heater and turned it off for the rest of yesterday and today however since yesterday we have used 42kw. The only thing I can think of is the dimplex radiators, but I guess that means we're going to be cold for a while, I should mention that we haven't used our washing/dryer at all in this time.0 -
Dimplex is the brand name they make various types of heaters. What type of heater a panel heater or is it an actual radiator full of water or a storage heater? Ditto the other 'heater' what type is it, a fan heater? Sorry but you are giving us nothing to go on, we need to know exactly what type you have. As I suggested look at photos online if you don't know the differences.
Please answer ALL the questions put to you, you've missed many that I asked.

Morning rbrown334,
Thanks ever so much to the guys that have already replied, some excellent information there and we do need all the info to give accurate answers.
Not sure if I've missed this, but did you read the meters when you first moved in, are these used on the bill.
I understand that the bill is now calculated up to actual readings.
You're doing the right thing in taking regular meter readings, it will be the heating and hot water that is using the majority of the energy.
I think you are best off speaking to the consumption department to go through the appliances/ heating set up etc. They have good knowledge in this area and will be able to help you reduce your usage.

Hi rbrown334
without going into technicalities, I live in a very similar 2 bed flat, with electric everything. Heating (night storage), water (immersion), cooker, shower, tumble drier, washing machine, etc.
On top of that, the building has large single glazed windows and lots of air leaks which make it a pain to keep warm.
Our electric, which thankfully comes through a pre-pay meter, is about £150/month for this winter period. 3 months would take us to about £450. If you are using convector heators and not eco7 night storage, I could see your bill being easily £500.
Like I say, nothing technical, just some figures based on a similar situation.0
