Good evening all,

I was just wondering if anyone had ever got a Certificate of no Impediment before?

My Fiancee and I are not sure if we will wed abroad on the UK.

Do we still need a No Impediment if we marry in the UK or abroad?

If we get a no impediment then what information do they place on the board for the public? ie my name, my Fiancee's name etc?

How visible is the information, ie inside of a book and it would have to be requested specifically?

Just I had a stalker and its been a nightmare keeping my life private from said person and having to keep my Fiancees name private so my fiancee isnt subject to any stalking via facebook or anything like that. So its annoying that Im going to have to throw all that away and publicly display all of that information!!! Do they have to put my Fiancees name on the board? How visible is it?

Does the Cert of no impediment HAVE to be at my local office? Can it not be somewhere else? or abroad?

Do I HAVE to have a certificate of no impediment to get married? Maybe if we marry abroad the country where we choose might not stipulate a certificate of no impediment?

Are there some countries that do not require a certificate of no impediment?

Any help would be appreciated!!

I think the certificate of no impediment is for Scottish people marrying abroad, English people seem to be able to get a Stat Declaration! I'm getting married in Cyprus and have to get one prior to going. Think its £30. You can download the forms online and it has your name, addresss, occupation etc and your mum and dads. Not sure if its viewable in a book but id imagine it would just be the actual marriage certificate they could search for

Not sure if anyone is able to view

I think in England it may be something different

Hmm Im not sure, hope someone knows the answers to these questions.

Are their any countries that do not require a certificate of no impediment and just a Birth Certification, like some countries you just need a notarized affidavit from each of the parties stating that you are currently single with no impediments to marriage.

I got married in Turkey, I needed a certificate of no impediment. Possibly your local registrar office may be the best people to ask some of these questions.

Do you think your stalker would know that you are intending getting married soon, and so would go looking for the public notices in the registrars?

Emma, I dont think you need a certificate of no impediment to get married in Cyprus. All you need is a Single Status Statutory Declaration

There is a thread about this , someone getting married in Cyprus, just type in "single status statutory declaration" but I cant post the link
  • We got married in Finland and required a certificate of non-impediment, we are both British.

Remember it being very straight forward - logisitically it was a bit of a problem.

Appt. at local registary office, then your names go onto a list at the main registary office (eg visited registar in Basingstoke, but list of names were displayed in Winchester) - collected paperwork, then off to Miilton Keynes to get an 'apostle stamp' to make it all legal and above board. The logistics were collecting at 12.00, and then getting up to Milton Keynes and getting the stamp all in one day.

I believe the list of names are literally stuck on a notice board in the registary office.

I seem to recall that the timing is critical, in that the certificate only has a certain life span.

I got married in the USA and we didn't have to show anything except our passports. If you were divorced they would have wanted to see your divorce certificate.

Are you sure this stalker is going to be randomly dropping into registry offices??

Because we're scottish we can pick which one we take. The certificate of no impediment seems much simpler! 1 form and straight to the registry office
  • It's all depends on where you are getting married so it's best to have a look at some destinations you would consider and check what the requirements are in those places. I know someone (british) who recently got married in the Czech Republic and had to jump through all sorts of hoops getting the certificate of no impediment and getting if officially translated and also had to prove she understood Czech or have an official translator for the ceremony to prove that she understood the vows etc. It was a huge hassle!

You might find this website helpful as it lists places for destination weddings and gives an overview of the legal bits you have to do for each:

If you marry abroad then the paperwork required will depend on the country you are marrying in.

As a PP said in the US you only require your passports. We married in Thailand and had to go to the British Embassy to get Affidavits signed. I'm sure that it would make no difference whether you were English or Scottish in that instance you'd be treated as a British citizen.

If you do get married abroad, one benefit is that you can then choose whether to have your marriage registered in the UK or not. Assuming you would wish not to given your circumstances.
