Tomato Puree -how long does it keep

I've had an opened tube of tomato puree in the fridge for 3 or 4 months. On the tube it says use within one month of opening. Will it still be OK to use - the sell by date is not till October 2007

  • hi,

hit the thanks button by mistake, but you can keep it anyway. :rotfl:

Yes it'll be fine, it's the jars you've got to watch, if left for a while after opening there's a fur grows on top of puree, so wouldn't use that stuff.

Tomato puree has a use by date?!

I always have a tube knocking about in the fridge, and it's generally been open for several months. Give it a sniff, it should be fine.

If you have access to an Asian grocery or deli then you'll probably find that the large tins of tomato puree are very good value. In order to avoid waste, put the entire contents onto a baking tray in teaspoonfuls or tablespoonfuls (or both, whatever you usually use) and open freeze them. When frozen, transfer to plastic bags or a rigid freezerproof container and use as required.

I'm sure it will be fine. If you're worried squeeze out a tiny amount, discard, and use the rest.

I don't see how it can go off easily so long as it's got the screw cap on as no oxygen can get in the tube. I'd happily use it! Ours has been in the fridge for about 3 months, we always use it before too long though x

Full agreement with the above. I usually have one open for months in the fridge too! Long as it's used by the use by date and it looks ok I wouldn't worry.

I always have opened tubes of tomato puree, and usually have no problems, but once I went to use it and the end of the tube (under the cap) was growing mould! I wiped it off and continued using the puree with no ill effects.
