Barclaycard - extra payment without stopping direct debit

Options
Hi

From past experience I know that barclaycard don't claim the direct debit if a manual payment has been made that's higher than the minimum.

For budgeting purposes have a set amount each month I want to clear before 0% end, this is higher than the direct debits. Now as this dd is one of the ones I will be using to qualify for the halifax £5 reward in the current account I am trying to find a way that the dd is taken plus so that I can make additional manual payment.

Has any one else managed to do this? I was thinking of trying to do the payment the day before the dd is taken or would this be too soon as well?

As its a fine line as well with the dd date and statement date, so don't want the payment too late that it rolls of to after the next statement and then stop the next dd.

The extra payments are usually done via barclaycards site with my debit card, incase that makes a difference?

Better to put the extra aside in an interest paying account and pay off the card with a lump sum at the end or near the end of the 0% deal.

You could let the DD collect and then pay off more

Agree with the posts above, but if you insist on doing it your way then the best time to pay is between the day before DD collection and the day before the next statement date (if paying by FP...debit card may differ slightly).

This will give you a 5-6 day window, but check your T&Cs to be sure (the 'up to xx days interest free' section).

Just set-up the additional payment in advance to go out as a Faster Payment transfer the same day as the DD. Or even a couple of days earlier, as the DD request needs to be sent at least 3 days earlier to be in place on the payment-due date.
  • My direct debit can be set up for the full amount, min payment, or a specified amount, if you know in advance what it would be, you could add the amount to the min payment and do it that way?
  • I have a Barclaycard which I'm currently concentrating on paying. They still take the DD regardless of overpayments you make - the only restriction is that when you make overpayments before they take the DD the amount has to be more than the minimum payment. If you look at your DD online there is a little information box with info about the DD and how they do this - I came across it this very morning! My Nationwide card doesn't take a DD if you make overpayments though so I guess it depends on the company!

That's strange as they didnt claim my dd when I paid extra last time and when I asked barclaycard via the secure messaging, they advised that any additional payments woul stop the dd if more than the minimum payments

Thanks everyone for the help I appreciate it

  • I've just re-read the info box - it may be because I pay a fixed amount rather than the minimum?? Maybe if you set a fixed payment just a little over the minimum it will work the way mine is??

I have been paying off a Barclaycard BT for the last year using fixed monthly payments. My 0% BT offer ends 1st August and my final DD payment will automatically be collected on 30 July. Couple of questions:

With just one day between payment collection and the end of the 0% offer, will I be seen as having cleared the outstanding balance in time without incurring interest?

The fixed DD amount will be higher than the final balance. Will the DD automatically adjust itself to only collect the final balance or should I change my DD instruction requesting this?

    Thanks
