Hi!
I'm trying to speed up hubby's laptop a little, no reason to suspect it's currently infected with anything. Could anyone offer some advice about the Hijackthis log I've just run, please?

backup and reinstall, it's easier
then disable defender, and stick avast free on instead of mse!!

Ok... how do I do this? I read the instructions but I'm at the edge of my abilities and decided the option which gave me numbered stepswas the easiest!
All the important files etc are already on an external hard drive and a memory stick so I'm happy they're safe. I don't have any of the original discs however and the Vista sticker on the bottom of the machine has worn away so it's unreadable!
It's an Advent laptop if that helps?0 -
there's not a great deal to trim from the hijackthis log, osd, defender, mse, citrix, google,WMPNSCFG.exe, mobsync - you could try disabling with msconfig/uninstalling and switching to avast, but generally vista onwards, a factory restore works best.
suggest doing a macrium image backup to an external drive, and creating a macrium boot cd first, and create vista recovery dvd, and anything really important, backup to dvd, then if anything goes wrong, you can recover everything and have multiple backups.

Ok, I've downloaded and installed Macrium. I've not opened it yet but just to check what I do next....
1. Do the Macrium image backup to the external drive
2. Create the boot CD
3. The create the Vista recovery DVD
4. Then do the hard drive recovery thing on the link in your post
Is that right? Will Macrium tell me how to do 1-3?0 -
see the video in speedup sticky - you want to "image this disk", not clone(cloning would wipe your external drive, which you don't want to do), and store the resulting file on an external drive, should prompt you to create a macrium boot cd at the end of the backup, if not, it can be done from the menu. Once you've done this, if anything goes wrong, you'd boot from the macrium cd, and restore from the image from the external drive, and it will put the machine back to how it is now.
As an extra precaution, I'd recommend burning (copy not move) a dvd with anything really important as well, especially if you have any data in once place.!!
