where to invest?

My husband has decided to take early retirement this year, so will come out with a lump sum and a pension, can anyone tell me the best place to invest about £50,000 at the moment as we just dont know where to put it?

Will he get this lump sum before or after 5th April (tax-year end)?
If you haven't both used your ISA allowances for 2012-13 you should do so before 5th April. After that you can use next year's ISA allowances. There are links at the top of this page to Top Savings accounts and ISAs.

At the moment, current accounts are giving better interest rates than savings accounts, as long as you meet their conditions. You could put £20K in a Santander 123 account at 3% and £2500 at 5% in a Nationwide FlexDirect. If you use sole accounts, rather than joint, each of you could receive these rates.
