Wedding insurance

Any recommendations of decent wedding insurance suppliers?

Do people feel it is necessary?

Are there things you would particularly want covered and other things that perhaps aren't so important?

We are trying to weigh up the cost of cover against the benefits and potential pitfalls if we don't have cover.

We are looking to get married in August 2013 and I already have my dress (sample sale) so we are wondering how essential insurance is as August really isn't that far away now (panic stations!!).

I would be inetrested to hear recommendatiosn, comapnies to steer clear of and general opinions on wedding insurance.

We are looking at booking our venue in the next couple of weeks and because we are already less than 6 months to the wedding date we will have to pay most of the venue cost up front so want to make sure we are sorted with insurance before then (if we decide to go ahead with insurance).

I had the same thoughts at first. We looked into it and decided that for around £35-£50 it's peanuts in the grand scale of things. Especially given the average cost of a wedding is £20k! (Not that ours is!)

For our wedding, the biggest spend is on the reception and we're lucky that it's at a large hotel chain so unlikely that it will go bust. But we are using smaller suppliers which may fail to deliver or decide to go bust two days before the date.

Also what if (heaven forbid) a close relative is seriously ill/dies just before the wedding and we need to reschedule? For me the insurance really is to give me that peace of mind.

Check your policy before you sign up. Some will not cover things you've already signed up for before you take the policy out. Others will.

The ones we've used are: http://www.weddingplaninsurance.co.uk/

I guess the proof is when you claim and fingers crossed I won't have to find out.

I would absolutely get insurance, you literally never know what could happen. Suppliers can go bust, but also one of you could get ill or injured or something totally random - it's just not worth the risk when insurance is so cheap compared to the cost of your wedding.

There have been some stories on here if you search the threads - just go for it.

  • Hi, I am also getting married in August and have just bought wedding insurance last week. It was about £20 from E&L. I think it's worth having for peace of mind.

My wedding is in three weeks and we didn't get insurance. I think I need to touch every wooden item I pass in the next three weeks and keep all fingers and toes permanently crossed that it was the right decision!

One thing I would say is if you're getting insurance, make sure you get it before paying deposits on anything or it won't be covered. The insurance must be in place first.

cant advise you one way or the other whether you should or shouldn't get insurance...its one of those things you hope you wont need...but some people are very grateful when the unexpected does happen and they are covered!

We initially didn't have insurance and our first venue went bust after taking our deposit. I paid by credit card so got it back.

We then got insurance (with E and L) but luckily, never needed to claim again.

As others have said, it's not just if the suppliers etc go belly up. One girl on here (some time ago now) had her wedding booked in December and it just so happened that the UK was hit by severe snow. Essentially, this meant that her guests couldn't get there, and I think some of her suppliers also struggled with delivering the goods. Her insurance paid out in that case.

Our wedding was on 26 January and we got badly hit by snow; it was touch and go that our guests could make it to the hotel on the night before. The M6 was actually closed, it was that bad. The snow only lasted a day but sometimes that's all it needs to throw a real spanner in the works.

For the sake of 30GBP or so, then do it.

Well I think you have all convinced me. I hadn't realised that premiums were so reasonable and for that amount it seems silly not to.

So, now to the question of which policy is best?

No it doesnt have to be in place first, the deposits can be paid with some insurers before you take out the insurance.

Depends how much your wedding costs overall. When I briefly looked at wedding insurance our premium would have been getting on for £200.
