Right, mine has an option for 2min, 5 min or 15min for "save to file", but if its set to say 15 min and I only drive say 5mins then stop, it saves that 5 mins anyway, so what the point of it?

It means how long/big do you want the files to be. Ie if you drive for one hour and you set at 2mins you have 30 files to open and review bit they are quite short or if you set @15 mins you only have 4 files to open but have to scroll through 15mins of video.0

Based on my experience with these sort of things...
I think those time settings are how long it records a video before starting on a new video file, it will at the same time delete the oldest recording to make space (when the disk is full)
So set to 2 mins and left going you should end up with a continuous collection of 2 minute long each videos, 15 minutes, 15 minute videos.
I suppose the point of that is how often what your hoping to catch happens the videos will be time stamped so if it only happened a couple of minutes ago it might be easier to find in a 2 minute rather than 15 minute video file.
The reason it stops at 5 minutes when set to 15 minutes is that it probably has motion detection so stops when nothing moves in the scenery, the 15 minutes will just be the maximum it could run to before starting a new video, not the minimum it will record. you may be able to disable this by turning off motion detection.0 -
What's the make of camera?
Some cameras have a rolling video i.e. it keeps recording but only saves the last 5/10/15 mins of video to a file. so that in an accident you end the a recording with the accident and have 5/10/15 mins of the preceding events to see what happened no matter how long you drive.
Or it's just a cheap camera that saves it in segments when the engine is running and the car is moving.Laters

Depends on the make
some are tied to the car's electronics so just after the air-bags deploy the recording stops
Others have a motion sensor that stops the recording after a sudden deceleration. (i.e. when you hit something solid! or slam the brakes on hard).

Its a real cheepo less than £20 delivered, but works well, it aint HD of course even if there is an HD setting. The argument in post 5 dosent apply because the whole recording is date/time displayed. In any case if you had an accident you would switch off so the incident would be at the end. Its an HD DVR loads on Fleabay. Ok but night time (especially in wet) is pretty dire, even on lit roads.0

I've been thinking about this again. What if the collision provokes a 'road rage' incident? The recording would stop just before the abuse/attack starts!0
