I have purchased and installed a powerline setup and this; fast ethernet pci adapter 10/100 base-tx, is this the right sort of adapter? I am getting speeds of 12-15mbs now which is a big improvement.0
-
what security software is installed, av/firewall etc, how are you testing speed?
post a hijackthis log and commit charge from task manager
I would have thought an XP machine would come with a 10/100 card already, if it's not too late check in device manager before spending money!!

Closed, I have windows firewall and eset anti virus installed.
I am speed testing my a speed test site, however I get different speeds on firefox and ie.
Commit charge is 913mb.
I have checked the system and I have Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC installed, I only get speeds of 5mbs using this. I have over double the speed on the new ethernet card.
This is the hijack this log;

might run better with some of these uninstalled or disabled from startup using msconfig
rapport, conduit, jqs, jusched,ctfmon, bs player, conduit, promptservice, quicktime,dumprep, flashPlayerUpdateService.exe,STSService.exe,googleupdate,openvpn, netware client.
also some remnants of old software, the file missings/no files could be cleared up using hijackthis!!
