When are caps locked?

Minor irritation but I need a solution.

Using my laptop, it lets me know when caps are on,however on my desk top PC it doesn't do this, so I never know when the caps are on or off until I type something. Annoying when logging in to some sites that require caps but show as dots, I do forget to check before using the caps key.

Thanks for reading.

if you have no light indicators on your keyboard then your only solution is to buy one that does;)

You can make Windows beep whenever you hit the Caps Lock (or Num Lock or Scroll Lock keys). Handy if (like me) you hit them by accident.

    It's something called "Toggle Keys".

I think the way to get to that setting varies with different versions of Windows, but you might try holding down the Num Lock key for a few seconds until it comes up with a message.

I don't have a light on when caps are on with my laptop either, but I do get a Caps On message, which is helpful.

I'm running Windows 7 pro at work and I get a little pop-up when I alter num lock, caps lock or scroll lock.
Not sure why or how it works but I'd love to have it at home as well (Windows 7 Home Premium).
    Anyone any ideas?

I used to work with someone who was forever hitting the caps lock key in error when typing 'a'.

His solution was to remove the caps lock key top.

    Crude but very effective.

My Dell keyboard has a recess in the caps lock key so that this won't happen so easily. Sadly not the case on my laptop keyboard :(

You can always disable the caps lock key as no one uses it much anymore.

    This got me thinking.

I've never been a fan of laptop keyboards, I'm used to a full sized keyboard and only use the laptop at meetings and you made me wonder why I don't seem to suffer from the problem when using the laptop so I had a closer look at it.

On my laptop, a MacBook Pro, If you hit the Caps Lock key while typing it doesn't turn caps lock on, you have to press and hold it to turn it on.

There's a delay, it's only a very tiny delay but it's sufficient to prevent a quick dab while typing from turning caps lock on.

What a brilliant idea and so simple. I know my desktop, an iMac doesn't do this as I do occasionally manage to turn caps lock on while typing. I'm going to have a look in the settings to see if it's configurable.

Also you're bang on about disabling Caps Lock, I can't remember the last time I turned it on deliberately. There must be some people out there that use it but I'm not one of them.
