hope someone can help, we have looked at a house today, the meter had 3 readings - can't figure out why.

its got an oil fired combi running the central heating / water.

puzzled at the moment and the estate agent is equally confused

  • its an eco 7 meter, day, night and total . the one what show in the daytime hours will be the day rate.(usually rate 1 ) It should move onto the night rate around 12.30 to 7.30 am. Eco 7 meters are most useful with night storage heaters or all electric houses. Get it changed to single rate billing if you dont use approx 30 % of your total electic at night as you will be paying too much on the day rate

I find it hard to believe that an EA can't identify an E7 meter. Too busy working out their commission presumably...

Was the ownere not there at the time of the viewing?

The EA should be able to ask the owner if not

Did you take any photos? If so, post them here otherwise we will just be guessing.
If not, take photos on second viewing and post them here :)

How do I work out if I am using the 30% or less on Economy 7. Will my supplier tell me this and if it is not worthwhile will they charge me to change the meter? I use British Gas

It's simple arithmatic to work out the pecentage low rate usage as a percentage of total usage.

Your supplier will tell you if you call them, and they will also tell you the difference in price for your usage on their tariffs.

However, best to pop the figures into a comparison site to see you would be better off with a different supplier. 30% was an average figure, but it can vary widely. I've even seen some some tariffs in some regions where you would always be better off on E7 compared to their equivilent single rate tariff, no matter what low rate usage you consume.

BG probably won't charge you as they probably won't need to change the meter ;)
