There are 3 types of SIM
Standard
Mini
Micro
You can get converters for ebay/amazon to convert smaller ones to larger ones.
In can trim a "standard" sim into a "Mini" if you go carefully.
This should give you an idea :-

If the SIM is smaller than it needs to be then you just need an adapter
Search ebay for "sim adapter" or "micro sim adapter" - here is an example below. They are not expensive - the ebay example below is £1.50 for two
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MICRO-SIM-ADAPTER-CONVERTER-FOR-MOBILE-PHONE-CLICK-IN-NO-STICKER-MICROSIM-/200832927197?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item2ec29345dd
A similar search on Amazon brings up an example such as the one below although they seem very expensive on there - the example below is £1.99 just for one!
http://www.amazon.co.uk/NEW-DESIGN-CONVERTOR-CONVERTING-TECHNOLOGY/dp/B005SV2H9I/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1363337266&sr=8-1
Most are, however, quite flimsy and are not designed for regular switching in and out. I use these types of adapters regularly to switch sim cards between phones at work when people have faulty handsets and I need to set up something temporary.
Just be careful when inserting and it all works a treat - the connections are the same so its just the physical size of the plastic that needs changing.
Hope this helps.0 -
Penny, I have a 3 dongle and use prepaid SIMs from eBay. I have been doing this since September 2008.
I have noticed two things:
the allowance is being used up much faster now because of modern websites; you have to be very careful when buying SIMs because there are many different kinds on the market now.
I hope that you manage to fix the problem.Who having known the diamond will concern himself with glass?

Don't forget nano-sims, which is thinner as well as smaller than a micro sim, as many people who purchased an iPhone 5 discovered0 -
I use a full sized 3 SIM, cut down to nano size in my iPad OK
The slight difference in thickness hasn't been an issue0 -

Yes, have you tried the sim in the adapter and it fits?
Is your current sim/dongle configuration also from 3? If so then you will be fine.
If your new sim is 'live' then why not try it now?0 -
It's all quite amazing, I remember the SIM card on an old old old Motorola being the full credit-card size!0
