Taxation for funded PhD students with part time job

Hi,

I'm a new PhD student and do some independent part time work to supplement my rather meager research grant.

I know my research grant is considered tax free, however I want to check that my side income is taxed independently of my research grant. i.e. that my personal allowance (£8,105 for 2012/13) also applies to my part-time work before taxing above this level?

And if yes, do I still need to declare earnings below this level?
