                    Hi All
I am after some advice about getting a new bike. I used to have a old student bike (i work in a school) to nip into town at lunchtimes. Unfortunately it became unrepairable and had to be skipped.
I've managed without one for over 6 months but now I'm having to drive and park at the edge of the city. The plan is to buy a new bike and cycle the mile each way to/from the car to work.
I see lots of other people do this but seeing as I will leave the bike locked to a lamppost or whatever I can find where I park, what is the best bike for me to buy? I'm toying between buying second hand or getting a brand new cheap Halfords bike.
I don't really want to spend over £100, particularly as bikes regularly walk from my city centre work location!

If it is just a mile, you could brisk walk it 15-20 mins each way. Getting the bike in and out of the car each day/locking it or storing it for such a short journey will be a pain after a while. Bike in - bike out - bike in - bike out everyday, unless you can leave it in car overnight.0

I would go for a good second hand one as your budget is £100
Surprising the number of bikes bought at Christmas, ridden a couple of times and then put away
Cheap new bike, it will put you off cycling for good
My everyday ride is a 1996 Kona, no suspension, proper lightweight steel frame, cost me £75, owner had original sales receipt, for over £1,000
Look in local press or police auctions / sale of unclaimed bikes
 Good luck

For a 1 mile journey anything with air in the tyres and working brakes will do. Look locally for a cheap secondhand bike.0

Depending on how flat it is how about a kids scooter? I commute on the train and quite a few people have started using them, obviously depends on how far you are going also.0

Do not buy a cheap Halfords Bicycle Shaped Object. Far better to go second-hand with a good lock.
The ideal solution is a folding bike, but a Brompton or similar is way over our £100 budget, but you can take it with you into the Office/Car.

I would be looking at something cheap off Gumtree. Where I live I saw a nice old mountain bike for £20.00 which would have been ideal for someone like yourself. You should be able to pick something up for less than £100.
Also get two locks, one of those decent D locks and a thickish cable type one as well.Leave it in a very public place etc.0
