Just a thought, would this work? Daughter goes back to store gets parents to telephone store quoting cc details etc store then makes refund under cardholder not present system, same as used if original order had been placed over telephone.
Refund is made to original card, store gets their credit from card issuer.

    Maybe it would work.
It really does depend on the store's policy with regards to Money Laundering Regulations etc.

The regulations are in some ways vague, but do place a responsibility on the trader to ensure that they are dealing with money in a proper way.

Some stores may decide to take slightly more risk, apparently like Tesco in the OP's example, whilst others will have more stringent rules.

In other words, the only way to find out if your solution would work would be to ask the specific store.

I have deleted this post as I do not like the rude, judgemental replies given by some (not all) of the posters. This forum is supposed to be supportive and helpful - posters should not make things up (Uggs??) and suggest that people have tried to be fraudulent when there is no indication of that.

My situation was a very simple problem - faulty goods (accepted by the retailer) but no physical way of getting a replacement or a refund.

I love MSE and lots of posters on the forums are incredibly helpful to others but some are clearly just out there to push their own opinion and try to be destructive. Please try to think before you post next time.

You need to develop a thicker skin if you think the responses in this thread are rude and judgemental! There's really only one post that could be regarded as a bit OTT, and the answer to that is to put the person on Ignore so that you don't need to see what they post in future.

Apologies for the Uggs post... I had just read a post about Uggs and was replying on my phone so couldn't see the OP - My mistake!

    The rest still stands though.

No one suggested you were being fraudulent, we were explaining that's why the policies are in place, and why the shop won't stray from these policies. They don't know that you're not money laundering. The people who do it tend to be fairly convincing.

No, most stores will not authorise staff to do cardholder not present transactions. Yes, the online/mail order part of the business can do them but its a rare physical store that will do it.

A credit does not require authorisation. As such there is no issue with a card reported as lost stolen. It will go to a banks internal account and then be transfered to the correct account.

Am i missing something? Re-read all posts and can't seem to find one 'rude' or 'judgemental' post on this thread.
All i see is posters who have taken their time to be helpful with the OP in her request for help and info.
Like to see what would happen if she asked a question on the 'Benefit & Tax Credits' forum.

I thought that perhaps post #9 might upset a sensitive soul, but as you say, there's a lot harsher treatment handed out elsewhere!

That has not been my experience,
    John Lewis
    Boots
    Fenwicks
    Multiyork

After having been in these stores came home and did price comparison then telephoned them, to order, they have all accepted payment on visa, sent slip out in post marked "cardholder not present".;)
