Nikkik - as you have inside knowledge about Argos would you be so kind as to help me with this please:

DD's ipod that we got her for Xmas has stopped working. We had bought a 3 year replacement cover as we'd heard how ipods break down a lot. But it came with one-year guarantee so decided to claim under this rather than use the replacement cover, as if we'd used the cover and say it broke again after 3 or 4 months we would not get another replacement. Is this making sense?

DH took it in and they have sent it off for repair, which I was a bit suprised at, (thought we'd get a new one) but if they can repair it that's fine. DH had to sign something to say 'if the problem is not caused by a manufacturing fault than I agree to pay for the repair'. I don't think its anything DD has done to it.

Will we still be able to use the replacement cover after we get the ipod back?

    Thanks

I have one question for nikkik. Do employees of Argos get commission each time they sell Product Replacement or Breakdown Cover ? Just a thought !

Ha! Commission...I wish! Absolutely no perks for offering Argos Cards and all the extra covers. The only incentive we have is that if we meet any targets we dont get hauled over the coals...

I thought that was the case. In our local Argos you can see into the back room and the staff notice board. On there I have seen the "targets" for each of these products and the actual amount sold. In most cases they seem to be well below what they should have been selling.

  • Annabee, ummmm, i think i know what you mean lol!

If i understood you correctly - you have not yet used your replacement cover, you've opted to send it for repair under Apple's own manufacturers warranty, that's fine. As for the bit just above where you sign about possible charges, don't worry, it's under it's warranty and you haven't personally broken it yourself- so there will be no charge. HOWEVER, through my personal experience (and if i'm being honest, around 75% of our customers) when you get your ipod back they'll probably either say that there was nothing worng with it or that they've fixed it, even though they haven't! But saying that though, they might actually have fixed it, it really just depends! Their repair service is appaling and has made for some very angry customers!

So if the ipod breaks again once you've had it back you can again either send it for repair (free of charge if still under its year) or use your replacement product cover where you will get an instant replacement right there in store. Once you have used your replacement cover though, you do need to pay for another one if you wish to take out the insurance again. The 3 years will start from the day you buy it.

And jennybear, don't get me started on bloody targets and what not! Does my head in! Thank god i'm only there until i start uni lol!

Hope that's answered your question Annabee, if not just ask again lol!

Thanks for your reply Nikkik, it was very helpful. Sorry but I've thought of more questions!:

If I used my replacement cover and got a new ipod would the new one be covered by the 12 month guarantee and if so would this be from when I received the new one or from when I bought the original last December?

And also, if as you say Apple are terrible and don't do the repairs properly or at all in most cases then what happens next? If this is true then I can foresee having to take it in several times over the 12 month guarantee period, and each time this happens my daughter will be missing her ipod for a fortnight or more. This could get very frustrating and you have mentioned angry customers. If this happened then surely at some stage Argos would give us a new ipod as the goods are not fit for purpose? I thought under consumer law it was Argos's responsibility and not the manufacturer's (Apple).

Sorry for bothering you. I realise you are not a director or anything at Argos! I just wondered what happens when customers keep coming back.
