Long numbers without spaces in web forms

The different lengths of the long number between card types shouldn't matter - every time I've entered CC data the process has always asked for the card type early on so a form tailored to the card could be presented or written on-the-fly using javascript.
Numeric keypads - not all keyboards have them - especially laptops. This keyboard does but I virtually never use it.
To be user friendly forms need to be carefully designed with fields of the correct length and a note beside them of the format required where this is in doubt - eg dates, sort codes, MACs, etc. etc. Some are. Many aren't.
The IR tax forms used to be a real pain insisting on zeros in some places and spaces instead of zeros elsewhere plus requiring 0.00 in some places. I think this has been improved or I've just got used to filing my self assessment now as I don't recall swearing too much last time I used the site.0
