New PC - old operating system

The issue is that XP will be stopped being supported which includes security fixes and such, and unless people are very careful this will scupper them eventually.
I'm running two XP machines as we speak, I've never bothered with any virus checkers apart from Free AVG, and I think that expired a couple of years ago.
The only virus I've ever had was when one of these machines was running Vista. I went back to XP and haven't had a problem since.
What do you see as the actual problem?0 -

The problem is that Microsoft will stop plugging the holes in the dyke in around thirteen months' time. Unless your PC is kept in a hermetically-sealed vault filled with something other than oxygen, disconnected from the 'net and switched off it's likely to come a cropper sooner or later.0 -

That might work for someone like you who is net-savvy. The average user sadly is certainly not. As continued posts on here ('Windows called me, was it genuine?') confirm.
XP has been a great OS, but it's now time to let it fade away. It's already lasted years longer than Microsoft ever intended. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
Firstly, Googler has been very, very lucky, if not infected by Virus in 2 years.
Although how would he know, my friends PC runs fine, even though someone else uses it for sending nasty emails to others, my mate is oblivious to the fact, until I told him, not that he has done anything about it, as his PC runs fine.
I have been looking at upgrading my monitor (14 years old, but at 21" and 1600x2000 res a new wide screen 28" will only have 1080?), but have seriously thought about just getting a new box, instead mainly because I am running IE8, and starting to have problems, also XP is now showing its age, I have a dual core box, so that along with XP will still be a salebale item on Ebay.
And guess what a quick search yesterday saw a dual core, Windows 7 and MS office 07 go for £62 on Ebay.
I had upgraded my Laptop this time last year,to a dual core XP Pro, and juicy software £100, so I reckon another 6 months and the Laptop might need replacing, while it is still saleable.
Windows 7 is looking good for 3 to 5 years, but XP is really starting to show its age, I just tried going on Noddle to check my credit rating (another thread on MSE) and it is insisting I upgrade to IE9 or crappy firefox and others before I view the site?
The problem there is IE9 has problems with XP, so time to ditch XP me thinks.
Just as I had to do with MSdos5 lol for that new fangled windows95.0 -
Not sure why everybody complains about Windows 8 so much just built new PC and after reading bad press was going to install windows 7 on it but decided to give windows 8 a go and apart from a couple of small niggles I like it.

My dad (in his 70s) went from Windows ME (first PC) to Vista :wall:
That's borderline abuse. I'd set social services on his IT support.I'm dreaming of a white Christmas.
But, if the white runs out, I'll drink the red.0
