If you can find £530 you can buy a waterproof camera and lens with the biggest range of legacy lenses of all. Mind you it's not a Canikon

Damn that trigger finger was itchy yesterday
    Boy does it feel good

What sd card do I go for? Didn't know they came in differing speeds?

I didn't realise how important the speed of SD cards was, until I put a high capacity, but low speed one into my DSLR.

    :-)

    Canon EOS 1100D = 12.4MP. Nikon D3100 = 14.2MP. No brainer?

PS. Nikon's new 'entry level' DSLR, the D3200, is a massive 24.2MP, but it's new and expensive.
If you fold it in half, will an Audi A4 fit in a Citroen C5? :)

Why does an extra couple of megapixels make it a no brainer theres a lot more to a camera than megapixels.
  • I must say I agree with the above. I don't see why those extra megapixels would make much difference, unless you were wanting to make MASSIVE prints.

Exactly, unless you're printing huge pictures or cropping tiny parts from the original image. I've never understood why so many people are obsessed with the megapixel myth.

Even if you print every picture at 10" x 8" you only need 5MP to do it.

What is more important is image quality and past a certain amount more pixels can be detrimental.

As you crowd ever more pixels on to the sensor those pixels become smaller and as a result can gather less light. This is what causes 'noise' in low light conditions. There may be more data but the quality is lower.

The problem is the 'man in the street' likes to keep things simple and the maths behind image quality are complex so they latched on to Megapixels.

Unfortunately it's only a tiny part of the story, fortunately most people are happy as long as their holiday snaps and the kids birthday party pictures turn out OK so the myth remains.
One by one the penguins are slowly stealing my sanity.

I don't think you can go wrong with either Canon OR Nikon. They both make very good cameras.
