VAT reclaim on a self build house

Does anyone have experience of this?
My particular interest is what format was used to make the claim? Did the revenue office require every invoice? Was just a summary statement of all the invoices sent to them? Does the revenue office accept hand written or typed applications?
But any other observations would be welcome.
I appreciate this is a bit of a specialized subject. But I also know there are numerous knowledgeable posters on the mse forum.

HMRC is also rather knowledgeable on the subject - have you read their guide? Start here...
http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/vat/sectors/consumers/new-home.htm
for example it contains this gem "The notes explain the completion process on a step-by-step basis. They also tell you how to calculate your claim and what documents you will need to send in to support it"0 -
I have done 2 VAT reclaims on new builds for 2 clients years ago and as far as im aware it was a simple procedure although time consuming. HMRC wanted a spreadsheet detailing the net and VAT cost of the invoice and what it generally related to. I recall they sent me a information pack and i sent them the spreadsheet together with all the invoices.0

Its easy. You can set your own spreadsheet up in their format or use their tables printed out to handwrite.
All valid receipts go into it.
2 Separate parts. One for receipts with vat separate, the other for receipts without vat. Then just add up the vat for the former and use a formula to get the vat from the latter.
Really easy to be fair.0 -

Is it still the case that on a new build you can only claim the vat back once?, ie wait until the build is finished and then make the claim.. Didn't you do a blog on your self build and posted a link in the DIY section months ago? or have I got the wrong man?..lol0 -
Its not receipts HMRC require, its invoices.0

Yes only one bite at the cherry. Quite specific it has to be completed or habitable.
Yeh used to be quite active over on DIY forum. Commenting on the same posts as you most of the time! Didn't get good vibes with that link, felt like a spammer!0 -
I recently made an old barn habitable for my aged mother to live closer to me. On completion I painstakingly filled in the reclaim forms. I received the reply that not only did we not qualify for the rebate but that we have been fined £1,300.00 as a "penalty for inaccuracies". I have appealed against this and have been told they will actively pursue me for the money. I have had no alternative but to pay - though I still don't understand why. I wish they could have been more helpful in the 1st place when I rang for advice. I feel I have been penalized for no good reason and not only think the fine is wrong, but the initial ruling as well.
Beware anyone trying to deal with this bunch of bullies.0 -

I think the VAT is only refundable when it's a complete new build and nothing else, restorations etc don't count. We knew this when we did our bungalow, all we had to work on were outside walls and two internal walls, the roof and everything else were taken off/out. They said we could demolish the whole lot and start again (getting the VAT back if we did it this way) but the new building wouldn't be allowed to be as big as extending the old building. Swings and roundabouts!!!!!0
