Hi,
I'm still new to the whole share thing but presume there is a cut of point during the year after which investments won't pay back the full dividend or is it always pro-rata from the date of sale?
Is there specific terminology that I should be looking for?
I'm considering buying SSE shares but have noticed for the last 2 years there has been a big drop in share price (>14%)around July. I was considering waiting to see if this happens again this year and then investing after that. Just wondering if I invested in say August what % of the dividend I would get.
(I know past performance is not a sign of future performance and all that)
thanks

there's a cut-off date for each dividend: the ex-dividend date. anybody who buys on or after that date doesn't get the dividend.
see the dividends section here for SSE: https://www.share.com/find-investments/advanced-finder/company-overview/?epic=SSE
SSE's final dividend, of 56.1p, went ex-dividend on 25 july last year. though that only accounts for a bit of the share price fall around the time.0 -

SSE's dividend history is at the following link

Dividends are not paid pro-rata. Either you get it or you don't. The critical dates are explained in the link from post #2. SSE would have seen its share price fall on the ex-dividend date in January, by the amount of the dividend to be paid in March. If you buy now, you will not get the March divi, but if you buy before the July XD date you will get the September divi.0 -
If you want to find cut off dates for dividends, take a look at:
http://www.upcomingdividends.co.uk
It's an excellent site, it provides upcoming ex-dividend dates for most UK (LSE) listed shares. It's quite comprehensive, as it lists ex-dividend dates for all the main FTSE indices and also for many smaller companies.0
