When I got my kitchen done last year, i bought both wall and floor tiles in Homebase and I am very pleased with them. I looked in Topps Tiles and one or two other independent shops but went back to Homebase. For the floor I got porcelain matt tiles and smaller glossy ones for the walls (Cotswold).

Why online? I much preferred to see them and feel them first. Colours can be quite different online and you can't test texture. I know you can order samples but then you have to stay in for delivery and you waste leave from work, particularly if you then don't like them.

I bought nice kitchen floor tiles from Topps, very pleased. I bought floor tiles for the bathroom from Topps, not cheap, not pleased, they were not square, and even my neighbour commented on the irregular tiling. I bought dirt cheap porcelain tiles from B&Q, £10 a square meter, and laid them. Very nice, square, attractive, cheap, better than the Topps ones that cost at least twice as much.

  • I bought mine from www.onlinetileshop.co.uk after seeing a product in a store but being astounded at the price. I found them almost half price online as the stock was being run down.

Great customer service. Arrived on a pallet, there were some breakages/damaged ones but they replaced them with no hassle the next day so no impact on the job. If you do order online ensure enough time in case of bad packaging/courier just in case.

The sheds are good on price if you can find something you like in their fairly limited selections, in decending order for range B&Q, Wickes, Homebase.

Otherwise use you local independent, or online, but get samples from them first.

Of the national chains, Tile Giant are not bad if you have one near you. Topps should be your absolute place of last resort.

I recently bought my kitchen wall tiles direct from Johnson's tiles as I couldn't find anywhere else that stocked the colour & size that I wanted. Sample tiles were sent free of charge & arrived the day following my request for them. Tiles were delivered the day after I ordered them.

The one drawback with buying online is that you can't take any boxes of tiles left over back for a refund as you can do with a bricks & mortar shop that is reasonably close to your home. My floor tiles came from Topp's so was able to return the overs to them for a refund.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.
