How long for child benefit (not a rival claim)

Hi
Does anybody know or have had experience of their ex partners relinquishing a child benefit so that they could then claim child benefit?
what Id like to know is how long it usually takes, as Ive heard stories that it can take months! Surely this cant be the case and it would only take a long time if it was a rival claim? ie to investigate?

I guess it would depend on a the circumstances and their investigations.

My OH's ex tried to claim the CB , even thought he was claiming and the kids lived with him.

The claim was put on hold and he supplied them with a letter from the school and dentist, saying that the kids lived with him, and to her relevant info.

It took abotu 3 weeks to be sorted out, but it was all pretty clear cut tbh, so it might take longer, if the sitauation wasn't so obvious.

It's just taken 6 weeks for my CB claim to be switched from my ex to me. Their phone line says it can take up to 12 weeks.
