Can I change insurance, while there is an active claim?

I hope some can help with this.

My wife was involved in an accident with a Romanian driver. So they have 6 months to accept liability. My insurance is now due for renewal, but they still have 2 months to respond. Can I change insurer or do I have to stay with my current one.

Don't quote me but I'm pretty certain you are free to change insurers but when it comes to the current claim you will still have to deal with the insurers that were in place at the time of the accident/ claim as, you and they are legally obligated to sort it as that's who the contract was with at the time.

Motor insurers have no issues with you switching. Until the claim is settled however it will have to be declared as a fault claim with the appropriate impact on your NCD.

It would be sensible to check with the new insurer that when the claim is hopefully settled in your favour that they will be willing to reinstate your NCD etc as appropriate

Thanks for the quick replies. If the other quotes are around the same, then I will stay with them. As it will be easier I think.
