Business is non-starter. How do I tell HMRC?

Hi everyone,
Well the plan was to set up a small dog walking/pet sitting business in the next couple of month. Change of circumstances means this now wont be happening.
I had already registered for self assessment etc with HMRC, and got my UTR through the post this morning.
Is there an easy way to de-register? I spend ages on hold trying to get through to HMRC today on the phone today but after being on hold for nearly an hour I gave up.
Is there any way I can de-register for self employment online or should I just write them a letter explaining the situation?
Thanks for your help!

I would keep trying to get through to HMRC on the phone. There is no harm done anyway, if you have not made any taxable profit but best to tell them and hopefully you will not get reminders etc... but I would not guarantee it!0
