Great Story - Barclaycard

I thought I was the only one on here who is a DD victim.
I changed bank from Halifax to Lloyds. Instructed that DDs were to be transferred to them but to keep Halifax open.
Transferred all my money from Halifax to Lloyds. Received a letter on 1st March telling me that if they didn't hear from me the next 7 days, they would take it as OK. On 18th March, Egg tried to take money from my Halifax bank. As I had no money in that account, Egg charged me £20 for rejected DD (yes, Lloyds had not transferrd my DD).
Halifax also thought it would have been fun to charge me £35 for overdrawing the account (as it was just a cash account) and £28 O/D fee every month.
I was absolutely furious!
Here are each party's responses:
Halifax:
Called Halifax and gave the CS Rep a mouthful, she hung up!!! Called again and a helpful lady empathised my situation and agreed to refund the money - but did tell me that it was definately not their fault.
Egg:
Basically told me what Halifax told me about how DD works and their costs blah blah blah but refused to waive the £20 failed DD charge. Even though I clearly paid that month's payment just a week ago manually. Of course it was sooooo obvious to cardholders that manual payments only count as extra payments NOT 'payment due'.
Lloyds:
Called them and was told that the DDs wouldn't have started after 6th April or something - which was not mentioned in the Transfer Unit's letter. As he couldn't resolve the problem, I had to give their Transfer Unit a call the following Monday.
Called the TU and was told someone would look into this and call me back that afternoon. No call that day so I called again the next day, was the same person changed to 'you will get a response within 48 hours'.
Fine, as I thought they would certainly take responsibility.
A day later I received a letter telling me that it's not their fault as they transfered all DDs on 18th (strange enough I called all parties on 19th but neither Egg nor Halifax received any instruction) and could not refund my loss - and asked my to talk to Egg, or make a formal complaint.
I haven't done anything since (as I don't have much time during business hour and their TU don't open outside business hours) apart from calling TSB about my £50 incentive - yes, after 70 days, I still hadn't received it.
I was livid - not that £20 is a lot of money but it's the principle! It certainly not my fault - as far as I could see yet I seem to be the one who had to lose out.
I kept telling myself I must fight for it. Even if it went to charity, it would make me feel better. However, after a quick phone call to their CS demanding MY £50, they have promptly installed it few days later. I thought I might just let it go as it would take another hour or so on the phone and I just don't seem to have the time.
If I had the time, I would definately make it as my priority and fight to the bitter end, as i felt it wasn't my fault. I did this with Orange about £18 monthly line rental after I cancelled the line - ending up costing almost £10 on my landline and the time writting a nice email to Oftel - Orange conceded in the end.

So the lesson to learn is that if you have a direct debit set, don't make a manual payment thinking that it supersedes the direct debit.
I've never thought that since I became old enough to receive credit facilities. I dislike direct debits except where they are necessary - I prefer to make payments manually all the time if it's something where the amount changes at least.
So, all in all, Barclaycard did nothing wrong. This time.0 -
Same here
Virtually all my payments to credit cards are doen manually, its not hard all you need is a simple spread sheet with the dates of when transfers have to be there and the date to transfer by with amounts.
If I was transfering accounts, I would definetly NOT leave it to the banks to deal with the DD transfer process !
