Advice please guys

Hi
im a single mum of one who works part time and gets tax credits etc.
In 2005 i qualified as a makeup artist.
For two years now ive been wanting to set up as a freelance makeup artist, but been too scared.
Ive just started looking into it again. Ive thought of maybe using virgin cosmetics, that way i can charge for my service plus sell their cosmetics at the same time for extra cash, that way id also get a makeup kit to start me off.
But what do i do now, how do i go about it? It seems people only want to help you if your unemployed- princes trust and new deal.
How do me and my son live until i earn enough money? The only thing i know off is new deal business where you can claim income support until you can support yourself, so would it be worth making myself unemployed?
Also, what happens with tax credits and stuff if you go self employed?
Is it even worth it for a single parent to go self employed?
Sorry for all the questions, i just need a starting point!
Thanks in advance x

If you work part time at the moment, can you not keep working and run your make-up artist business the rest of the time...

That way you get to keep your security and income of your job but get to try out your idea... if it all goes wrong then you have something to fall back on.

I am sure that you can still get Tax Credits etc if you go self employed, give their helpline a call 0845 300 3900.

Also talk to your local branch of Business Link, they will be able to offer you some good advice.

In certain areas there may be ESF Funding available for women wanting to go into self employment, Business Link may be able to point you in the right direction there as well.

    Good Luck

PS feel free to email me if you think I can help you any further, I just dont check the PM thingy often enough....

I agree with Morpheius. Most people I have known who have set up in business have done some whilst having another income to fall back on.

Dip your toe in the water and see what happens. People here will keep you right if you need it.

I can tell you unless rules have changed that new deal is only available after 18 months of unemployment.
I'd definitely speak to business link as you may be able to get loan or grant of some sort but they'll advise you.
