We have just tried doing it through our stereo and it worked! We used the red/white wires and put them into the back of the Sky box, the dvd is connected to the Sky box via a scart so it worked for that as well. Does that mean then that this system that we have ordered, if we plug that into the back of the Sky box instead of the dvd player it will work for both - like we have just done?

In theory, yes. You will of course only get sound from the Left and Right speakers of the 5.1 setup when you watch SKY but if that's OK by you then I see no reason why it shouldn't work. Again, I provide no guarantees :)

So if the system comes with 5 speakers, if we put one speaker by the tv, and the 4 positioned around the room, would they not all work?

They would for DVDs, but the way the system in question works is that it has one cable for each speaker, making 6 in all. As you only have 2 outputs on the back of a Sky box you can only plug in the left and right speakers.

What goes into the subwoofer? Would that not plug into the back of the Sky and then all the speaker leads go into the subwoofer/amp?

No, because the DVD player you get in the home cinema kit has inputs for all 5 speakers, whereas your sky box only has a single set.

I've had two different systems now, one with amp built into sub-woofer box and all the speakers attached to this, then to the dvd player via a triple set of phono leads (red & white) and the system I have now has the amp built into the dvd player so all speakers directly attach to this. Neither has been able to support surround sound on any other device, unless like I said before there's something I'm missing on my current system.

Even if your subwoofer has a built in amp you'll still only be able to operate 2 speaker channels from the Sky box.
