Hello,
I have a jvc dv camcorder and am trying to put my recordings onto pc, i can put photos on pc through usb cable but not the moving images! apparently i have to do that through a dv cable which i can buy......... but would like to know if i need anything else to go with this as i have heard the word FIREWIRE repeatedly when searching for cables etc. How do i know before hand if i already have this on my pc and WHAT is it?
any help appreciated

Have a look on the back of your PC and see of you have a connection like the one shown there. Or, find out what your motherboard is. You can get a card to fit your PC for about £5 if need be.
Edit: Which JVC is it?"I'm not even supposed to be here today."0 -

Sorry to butt in but I think the OP will find that it has a 4 pin IEEE 1394/Firewire connector. USB is only ever used to transfer still images. That gum you like is coming back in style.0

Ive done a few Googles for GR-D366EK+IEEE/1394/Firewire penrhyn, and havent been able to find anything."I'm not even supposed to be here today."0

Sorry about the PC world website, but DV output is specified.

I would be surprised if a DV camera didnt have a firewire connection as the connection is a regarded as a standard for DV video capturing.

yes it has firewire
The software provided by the manufacturer may only allow you to transfer pictures/stills taken from the camera and nothing else. Most dont provide video editing software with the camera. You need video editing software to capture to your computer.
Some editing programs may allow it via USB but the standard is via firewire by most.
If someone can recommend a free one then thats fine.
I personally use Adobe Premiere Elements (which is one of the best for standard use) along with Sony Vegas.

Firewire/IEEE1394/ilink are all the same. just the connections are different.
you need to check the connection on your camcorder and computer to make sure you get the right one.
On the camcorder the connection is most likley a 4pin. this is normally the same if your using a laptop. thus you need a 4pin to 4pin firewire.
Desktops tend to have 6pins so then it would be a 4pin to 6pin firewire. you need to check if you have the connection on your computer first or you may need to buy a firewire adapter.0
