Retailer arranges a courier collection for return, who is responsible when it is lost?

I returned a purchase to Freemans a month ago using their returns service... their courier and with printed off downloaded returns labels at their expense.
A month passed and noticed it is still not credited or noted as received so I emailed them regarding this and they are 'investigating'.
Now, a day after my return was collected, freemans site logged that this parcel had been collected, and so it being in the hands of their courier, I threw the barcode receipt away I had been left. It is now after all in the hands of their courier and they have acknowledged this, my bit and responsibility done.
I have argued this, but still they are 'investigating'.
I have taken the measure of doing a screen dump of the page showing collection has taken place as this is all I have.
Where to go from here?

If say they are, since you have no contractual relationship with their courier. You have proof it was collected so a strongly worded letter demanding a full refund before you take legal action (enclosing your proof) may suffice.0

They are responsible. They paid a courier to collect it from you; once the courier has collected it is their responsibility.0
