Should tell you on your insurance certificate, mine says:-
Driving other Cars.
Cover for driving other cars is limited to third party only. You will not be covered for any loss or damage to the car you are driving.0 -
A lot of insurers have now removed this extension because it was being abused. Check the policy booklet and your schedule.0

Have just been onto my insurance company and they say that the Policy holder (not additional named drivers) have Third Party covered to drive another vehicle for one off or emergencies.0

Yes, this is what many policies say now.
As mattymoo pointed out, this was being abused. My insurer described this to me the other week when I was enquiring about temporary cover for a vehicle, it is literally only for emergencies, not 'borrowing your mates car for the weekend'.0
