Argh, I paid £30 or whatever for the Maplin one :D

If it's the same kit, it's very fiddly to set up but is good enough for the price.

It doesn't look like it's exactly the same as the Maplin one, but then I don't really know how similar or different these enclosures are in terms of features or performance.

    I was considering a NAS solution a while ago and was looking at the Maplin one - looked to be good value, and I found an excellent blog about it here;

    Maplin Landisk Info

Might be useful if you have any issues with it - the chap seems to know his stuff. I didn't get one in the end.

Whether the same information is relevant for the Saverstore one I couldn't say.

    :)

FAT32 only supports files of up to 4gb; NTFS supports larger. Probably not too much of a problem for most people unless you have large video files to edit or large ISO's.

That's a windows problem, Fat32 can support bigger than 4gb. These NAS drives, or at least the one I have, are FAT32 supporting up to 16gb files and they do it transparently. So even my windows machine can handle larger than 4gb files when using my FAT32 NAS.

I've ordered one - thanks OP. I was close to having a trip to Maplins.

I'll use it for "my documents" and the like so that I can use different machines scattered around the house and garage for common email and browser bookmarks and history.

Can you use the LAN connection *and* the USB connection? Or is it either/or?

I want to plug it into the USB port on my DVD/Divx player, but also copy films onto it via the LAN.

If it does only support FAT32 and not NTFS you could format it as an HFS+ drive using Macdrive for Windows which is what I have done to one of my external HD's to play WMV HD files over 4gb on my Xbox 360 via USB (doing this gets round the 4gb file size that the 360 is restricted to in case your wondering why lol).

Btw, I wouldn't touch Saverstore with someone else's barge pole lol.

Anybody know if you can plug another USB hard drive into this and access both via LAN?

I know which model this is

    1. No you can't add extra drives to it via USB
    2. You can only connect it via LAN OR USB not both at the same time
    3. Inside I believe it is the same as the Maplin one
    4. Firmware: http://www.station-drivers.com/page/landisk.htm

    HTH :)

The blog on the Maplin one says you can connect both USB and LAN but it gives priority to USB. So for LAN to work you have to turn off the DVD player I suppose.

Decided against both Saverstore and Maplin and bought this one (Sumvision) from ebuyer, 27 quid delivered after google checkout.

I really fancy being able to watch things without having to copy to DVD or memory stick first then walk it over to the telly.

Do all these NAS enclosures have to be formatted as FAT32? I find that a bit off putting.

    Why?

What on earth do you need from a networked drive that FAT32 gets in the way of. Super-complex user permissions? Alternate streams? I decided that there would be no problem with FAT32 for mine but you have me worried now.
