Sainsbury's Grocery Delivery new charges NI

Options
I received an e-mail from Sainsburys today.

You may be aware that the Northern Ireland Government is introducing new carrier bag legislation from Monday 8 April 2013. This legislation requires us to charge for single use carrier bags.

From 8 April 2013 we will be introducing a 40p charge to each online grocery order to cover all bags used in your delivery. This is a flat charge based on the average number of bags used per order. We will forward the money raised from this charge to the Northern Ireland Department of the Environment.

The charge will automatically be added to your basket as soon as you've booked your delivery slot and will appear in your trolley when you checkout. It will also be listed on your receipt which you receive with your shopping. You can find more details on our Help Centre.

If you would like more information about the legislation please visit: http://www.nidirect.gov.uk/baglevy or call 0300 200 7879.

Thank you for shopping with Sainsbury's.

Why not just deliver without bags? Am I missing something here?

I'm really finding it difficult to work out the rationale behind the single use bag tax. It's supposed to be a revenue stream but won’t work, as the Republic has shown when you tax plastic bags their use falls off a cliff. This will generate little revenue but cost millions to implement and police. It seems to be about creating useless jobs.

yeah tesco let you do a 'naked' delivery :) not sure why Sainsburys insist on keeping their goods clothed!

I'm ok with the plastic bag tax though, seems fair enough to me.

I was pretty miffed when I saw this email last night. I usually shop with Tesco and always choose the option to not have plastic bags, but Sainsbury's aren't giving us that option. I don't mind being charged for them, but I'd like the choice.

btw, when it comes to online shopping and home delivery which supermarket do you find the best, ... Asda, Tescos, Sainsburys ?? Or is it just a price thing?

There's a website you can use to check the price of all the supermarkets. I can't remember the name.

If you are going to be charged for something you clearly can do without then surely you should be allowed to opt out and request not to have the shopping in the bags.

I think Sainsbury's really need to have a rethink on this.

Exactly. I wouldn't mind being charged for them if I asked for them either - it seems to me the use of plastic bags by Sainsbury's is for the convenience of their picking and delivery staff - not mine. Therefore why should I be taxed? It will be interesting to see whether Tescos and or Asda follow suit.

If they don't I won't be using their HD again. I know it's only 40p per delivery but it is just plain lazy on their part to apply this across the board. Saves them working out actual usage or allowing people to have the option not to use bags.
  • I wonder if you gave them the bags back when the delivery arrives...would you be refunded the 40p??

    or

What happens if you ordered something that did not need a plastic bag.....say a few cases of beer.....wonder if you would still be charged with the 40p ??

  • If you want to ask Sainsbury's why they hate the environment so much they force their customers to harm it, I guess you could start here: http://www.sainsburys.co.uk/sol/contact_us/contact_us.jsp
