People say don't go for OCZ. Don't know if they've improved since. Crucial may be good.
If going for Samsung 840, go with Pro as it gives much better write speeds although if not within budget, the 840 will still be better than a mechanical drive in terms of boot time. Otherwise, Samsung 830 Series. The 840 Pro gives you 5 years warranty. Others give 3.
SandDisk are also good.
I have a Samsung 840 Pro 500GB in main laptop (Samsung Chronos Series 7). SandDisk 256GB (still need to install in PC), and 128GB Samsung something SSD in my Samsung Ultrabook, plus a spare, which can go in one of my other laptops. Performance is improved in terms of boot time and program loading time. Boot time is about 15 seconds for me in Win7. Others have gotten a bit faster in Windows 8.
Just make sure you're not running Tune Up Utilities with a scheduled defrag as that just froze my laptop every time it was set to run (I disabled it after the discovery). It ran okay in the original non-SSD drive.0 -
Whilst the speed of the SSD will improve disk read and writes, the final link is the processor and onboard memory which of course will still work at its original speed.0

Laptop is a bit old but it was my Dads so I'm reluctant to replace it
Originally designed to run on Vista
I have maxxed out the memory, Its on Win 7, startup process is down to minimum
It just really sluggish to boot up and it even sounds like the HDD clanking and churning maybe the bottle neck
Its not my primary computer so storage is not a big issue
Just heard about SSD and it sounds like my last option really and could be just the KUTA it needs
This is in my basket at the mo and thought the price was good for 200 gb

assuming the hard drive isn't faulty (run chkdsk), and it has 1GB of ram or more, it shouldn't be slow to boot up (fresh install should boot in 30-60 seconds), post a hijackthis log, or backup data and reinstall W7!!

From the description it would appear to be a fairly "elderly" machine - probably with a pretty small HDD.
The first thing to do is get rid of all the junk, both data and programmes, that the existing HDD will have collected over the years. Then think about more RAM...............0 -

Like I say - Its now running Win 7, ram is maxxed out, startup on minimum files
SSD is now on order - looking forward to a spritely lappyWhen will the "Edit" and "Quote" button get fixed on the mobile web interface?0 -
Yep avoid OCZ - bought a 128gb SSD and it was hopelessly unstable. Had to send it back - replacement was the same.0
