Selling Items Not In Stock

Over the weekend a friend purchased an item listed as "more than 10 in stock" and 6 were sold over the weekend. Postage was SD and despatch 1 day. They got home from work tonight expecting to find a RM card but nothing. Checking e-mails there was one from the seller sent late this afternoon stating that the item was not available and he could either refund or send a lower spec model for £10 less . The item is still listed and yeaterday he increased the price by £50, in fact at the same time he increased the price of all models of this item except the one he is offering at the lower price. The original price was very keen and the new price is reasonable for the item, the lower spec item is roughly the same as you can buy it from many sellers.

3 possibilities come to mind

1) He fouled up and listed at the wrong price, several at £50 would make quite a dent in his profits. (He sold 23 across the range over the weekend, only 1 of the lower spec)
2) He never had any of the stock and is using it to shift loads of the lower spec as the higher spec is not really that much different and most would be fairly happy. Risky to feedback and stars though.
3) He is just an idiot

Just really annoyed with sellers at the moment

Maybe they expected to be receiving more stock, but it got delayed (possible considering weather).
They then upped the sale price to maintain their position in searches etc as wouldn't expect to sell any at the higher price.
Once they have stock again, they will drop the price back down.

The higher price is reasonable though and they would probably sell at that price. Why list if no stock with the promise of next day delivery.
