Hi everyone, been to lidl today for a few things and noticed they had some bread mixes where you just add lukewarm water to make the dough. They had wholemeal, rye, and sunflower seed varieties for 96p for 500g, which should make two loaves according to the pack. I bought some anyway as I have always wanted to have a go at making our own bread. It's resting at the moment. If this works out ok, I would like to venture further on and try making my own from scratch. I noticed they had an offer on strong bread flour for about 43p for a huge bag. I know I need to get yeast as well, but I'm a bit unsure of where to buy it from (cheap he he), I didn't see any in Lidl (but I could have missed it)! What else would I need to make it by hand, ingredients etc. I don't have a breadmaker or a food processor for mixing etc. If I get on ok with it and it's something I then do regularly, I would probably get a breadmaker then (do BM's mix the dough for you? sorry to sound a bit dense:rotfl:)

I found the lidl breadmixes to be fine..you can get yeast from anywhere...try the cooking ingredients aisle and look for fast action yeast or get fresh yeast from the bakery counter at supermarkets.
Breadmakers are brill and do everything for you including kneading and proving - I have had mine for a month now and love it.
I use it to make the dough for pizzas and teacakes etc which I then bake in the oven.

I use the Wrights bread mix, which is about 59p from most supermarkets, sometimes cheaper when its on offer. We like the chiabatta one, makes 8 lovely big rolls. Again you only mix it with water.
I've got a breadmaker, but don't use it very often now, I prefer my Kenwood Chef to mix dough then cook it myself, but at the moment the motor's gone and I can't use it.0 -

Go into your local Asda and ask at the bakery whether they have any yeast - I was given enough to make about 6 loaves, and it was free :TYou're only young once, but you can be immature forever0 -

I usually love Lidl; but found their bread mixes to make a loaf of a very strange colour-- quite offputting.

I've only tried the rye one - half of the packet went in the BM and it came out fine (my BM is foreign so has a dark bread setting). Tasted okay though.
The other half I did by hand and you could have used it to anchor a ship, I couldn't even put it out for the birds because I would have had to get the jigsaw out to cut it up. :rotf::staradmin:starmod: beware of geeks bearing .gifs...:starmod::staradmin:starmod: Whoever said "nothing is impossible" obviously never tried to nail jelly to a tree :starmod:0 -
I adore their rye mix. I love how easy it is to make and, having tried in the past, I wouldn't go back to making my own mixes. I leave the breadmaker to hubby, who doesn't seem to mind the salt-less tastelessness.
The rye bread does come out like a brick, but once you slice it up it is gorgeous - just the outside is hard. Hmmm, might go make some right now... Reminds me of bread at home I suppose...:wall:0 -

i don't know about Rye bread, never having made that, but my blog has instructions for making your own bread, any combo you like, from white to wholemeal to seeded. personally i make a seeded white/wholemeal combo that i've never had any complaints about, but there ya go. LOL.
I use dried yeast, as then i don't have to worry about it. I know both asda and tescos sell it; you get 8 packets, if i remember correctly, for about 70p or something like that, so its not earthshakingly expensive. You can get it cheaper from the bakery (as others have said) but that's fresh yeast, which i've not used - i stick to dry, i know it works (and if i have a week or two where i've not made bread, then i don't need to worry about it).
White flour from lidl, i've used, and that was pretty good, i'd buy it again. I tend to buy stoneground wholmeal flour from tescos which is more expensive - nearly a pound for a bag the size of the ones you'd get from lidl. Seeds: i buy pumpkin, sunflower, sesame and poppy seeds from tescos, pumpkin is around 80p a packet, sunflower 49p a packet, sesame and poppy are rather less - 20 to 30p a packet. I mix them all up with a similar amount of linseed (which i buy in bulk from a health food shop - don't ask how much cos i can't remember!) and it does me about 8-10 loaves, depending on how many seeds i put in.
regarding making it - i don't have a breadmaker either, i make all mine from hand. I make a couple of loaves, about twice a week, sometimes more if there's visitors n that. not dissing those who do - my MIL has one, and it produces very nice bread - just that i enjoy making it, and i have the time.. *shrug*.. to each their own. Yes, BMers do mix the dough for you. As far as i know you put the ingredients in, set the programme and walk away. LOL. MIL always put it on the night before so they'd have warm bread for breakfast.

I just bought a breadmaker from ebay and I am so pleased with it. Already I have made hot cross buns, 2 white loaves and a raisin loaf and they were yummy. Would thoroughly reccomend it to anyone.0

Thanks for all your advice and suggestions!!! Well after the dough had rested, popped it in the oven - the house smelt gorgeous whilst it was cooking!! Cooked it for the time it said on the packet - 60 mins. Well when it came out the crust was rock solid like armour plating lol sliced it up and popped some butter and jam on and it tasted gorgeous!!! Well definately buy some proper flour now and have a go from scratch!!!Marriages are made in heaven, but then again so is thunder and lightning!!!.....getting divorced lol :j
