Unpaid Training Prior to Starting Job

    I worked in a bookies for about 8 years and have never heard of unpaid training before.
    It takes about 6 weeks of training before you are able to be a proper member of staff, then another 6 months before you will get the full grip of the job.
    To be honest, I wouldn't. Its changed so much over the past 5 years and is not the fun sociable place it used to be.
    Its a lot of work for cashiers on minimum wage.
    Why do you want to work in the industry?

    Theoretica, nope, don't think it's any kind of qualification, more about how to do the job.

    Llindsey - it is possible that the training could be paid............I didn't want to ask the question in interview, I'll ask it as and when I hear back. I'll drop you a PM with the other things.

    Yes they will muck you about.

    I had this for one job, they insisted I came in for induction prior to starting. I was there from 8:30am through to 7:00pm roughly, all of it unpaid. Though I only found that out on payday!

    It was one mess about after another. Ended up quitting on the spot one day. The recruitment agent asked me why I quit, after explaining all the crap they were pulling (it was far worse than unpaid induction), the agency said that I was the 3rd person they sent who had quit like that.

    The company I work for (although in another industry) sends all new starters on an 8hr induction. This is then paid to them after they have completed their first full months work. So although most new starters are paid weekly they withhold the induction pay until they are fully trained in the job. This is due to the cost of training people up and the amount of people who quit after a couple of weeks. This is clearly explained to people at interview though.
