Who will pay for the funeral?

If someone dies in a council nursing with no insurance or estate who pays for the funeral? Is there a funeral grant if they were on certain benefits when they died? If there is a shortfall which with the price of even a basic funeral who is liable to pay. Immediate family have no money are on benefits themselves, any advice please. Also is the person that registers the death liable for the bill or is that a myth?

    Hi

the person who register the death does not have to pay the bill. The person who books the funeral has to pay the bill. But without the death cert it is impossible to book the funeral; so you can register the death but it causes havoc.

If someone dies with no money and no savings, the Council will try and get family members to book the funeral and pay. If they refuse, the Council will organise a basic funeral. They will allow mourners to attend.

Do you know if you can pay the funeral director in instalments I don't mean 1/2 but long term?

There was mention of doing it in the hospital for free but no mourners allowed but surely that is even worse than a paupers send off.

You would have to ask the funeral director as it would be up to them.

there is help available dependending on the finacial situation of the person paying for the funeral.

This should tell you what you need to know.

I always thought it was the financial situation of the deceased not the person organising he funeral.

The link I gave says it's the person organising the funeral whose financial position matters. Otherwise you could have someone well off claiming due to the deceased being without funds.
