Business vs Residential Supply

Hi!

My contract is up on our business electricity and I'm looking to switch. We are currenbtly on a business tariff with British Gas. Last year we used 21,000 units but we filled out a VAT declaration there is a 60(Home):40(Business) split as the shop supply is shared with a family flat. So 8400kWh for business and 12,600kWh for residential. Apparently our meter is actually listed as residential but British Gas Biusiness have us registered on a busines tariff. We also get invoiced for 5% VAT because we are a business using less than33kWh per day (12,045kWh per year).

My question is: do I have to be on a business tariff? I seem to get different answers from different companies. If most of the energy is used by the flat and the meter is registered as a residential meter then presumably it's okay for me to just go with a residential tariff? I tried ringing Ofgem but they didn't reply.

*** Aaaargh! I just re-read my renewal letter and I had to reply by the 8th March to let them know If I didn't want my 12 month contract renewing on 6th June. Is there a legal right to say I don't want it renewing even though I missed the deadline? It's a long time to notify them to say the contract date is 6th March!

Thank you!

Why did BG put a residential meter on a business tariff? Where is the meter is it in the shop or the flat? The issue could be whether the flat is deemed to be supplying the shop or the shop deemed to be supplying the flat.

Read the terms and conditions on the tariff you have as regards getting out of the contract.

The meter is on the shop premises and we've always had business contracts but when I spoke to Good Energy they said it's registered as residential. Is there anything illegal about just applying for a normal home elec tariff?

Not that this will probably mater if I missed the deadline... but maybe next year!

11.6 If you do not want to accept
    the new price arrangement
or terms and conditions in the
next pricing period or if you
want to end your current price
arrangement for any site at the
end of a pricing period, you
must tell us in writing. If you
    are a micro-business, you may
tell us at any time during your
    current pricing period as long
as you tell us at least 90 days
before the end of that pricing
period for that site. If you are not
    a micro-business, you must tell
us at least 90 days but not more
than 120 days before the end
of that pricing period for that
    site.
