You pay rent first, if you want a roof over your head! Then you pay your COUNCIL TAX, then your gas and electric, then food. After that you can do what you wish.
Council Tax is a priority bill and cannot be left unpaid.
I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe

Maybe that's why it was put second on the list after the rent.0 -

It wasn't on my list BOGOF babe nicely added it on, in my defence though I forgot as I pay everything via DD. 0 -

Don't get me wrong. I for one am in receipt of HB. But even when I wasn't, my mum taught me, the first thing you pay every week is your rent. The rest can wait. I've stuck to that advice throughout my life and will continue to do so when I receive the HB through my bank account.
It's those with some sort of learning difficulties that may have problems or just plain irresponsible people.
You sound like a good tenant.
My question is this.
You can't pay your own rent. You are reliant on others to pay it (or help you pay it). Why would I, as a LL let my 100K+ asset to you when others can pay their own way?
They are not (typically) short of money, vunerable, have learning difficulties, irresponsible, not subject to governement legislation etc etc.
They earn, they pay.
(Nothing personal BTW)Own_My_Own wrote: »Why ?
Because in one pilot area 11% of tenants have got in arrears ?
That just proves that 89% didn't get in arrears.
Oh please.
Read http://england.shelter.org.uk/__data/assets/pdf_file/0007/221659/LHA_directpayment_briefing.pdf- Over a quarter have
fallen behind with rent

95% are struggling to

payment better helps
them in managing
their rent and

You sound like mazza, responsible, know the rules etc.
But I can't tell you apart on a application to let so I dont even try anymore.
The Shelter PDF linked earlier states my view better than I can.
D70How about no longer being masochistic?

A thing I would note is that many working people I know dont pay their rent either, I had a housemate once(with his own contract) who was months in arrears with LL then when he did a runner it was found out he owned a house in a good area of London despite him claiming he was poor as he was African, had another housemate/neighbour before who was a student who claimed his loan had not arrived and 8 months later still lived rent free and he himself did a runner, in fact I know quite a few people who have done this and not one of them was on benefits, I even know a dodgy landlord who got HB paid direct to him and tenant started work (and told council via form and letter and have receipts for the cheques he paid landlord each week for rent) and landlord said he had no idea person was working despite asking him each time he came round how his job was going.Bogof_Babe wrote: »Just what I was going to say. People still insist that they "have to live on £71 a week", and that someone in work might be on three times as much, but they conveniently forget that the worker most probably has to pay all their own rent or mortgage AND their full council tax.
I would not say three times as much and the basic wage often means you are worse off than on benefits which in itself is low due to rent and travel or bills however a lot of people dont seem to know that you still pay council tax and can have rent top ups etc.
The DWP decided with me that I was overpaid HB a few years ago and without telling me(well the letters did not arrive) decided I would pay £15 a week despite my rent top up being £15 a week and having to pay council tax, gas and electric etc leaving me with a few quid a week to buy food if lucky.0 -

I can certainly understand why you don't in all honesty. I just don't like being tarred with the same brush if you know what I mean. But if you couldn't rent your property, would you not consider it then?4 Stones and 0 pounds or 25.4kg lighter :j0 - Over a quarter have

Because if she lost her job HB would already be in place and only need altering. Something that takes minutes.
Unlike a tenant not on benefit losing their job. A new claim would takes weeks. Could you afford to get no rent while it was sorted ?
