Bank account name

I have a friend who opened a bank account years ago but didn't use her full name as in her passport for the account. She's South American and they use two surnames and she just used the first surname for the account. She was given shares from the bank but later closed her bank account. Her address has changed since as well.
Now she wants to cash in her shares but the bank says her names don't match as her passport has the 2nd surname. They said she need a letter from a solicitor to resolve this.
Anybody know if there is there any easier way to resolve this?
