...should be no problem, except the annoyance of their admin not keeping track and you having to re-explain.

Or if you've been paying the non-smoker rate, they should pay a proportionately reduced sum assured.

For critical illness payouts, insurers don't tend to wriggle unnecessarily, but there can be admin errors like you describe.
