Advice on keeping the car

Hi,
My friend went through a similar situation as she has a car that's 10yr's old and she uses it to take her young child to several hospital/doctor/specialist appointments that are several miles away and some are very often on the same day and it is impossible to use public transport to get from one appt to the other in time (about 6 miles apart and only 30 mins to get there).
Sounds like you have a small child as well, tell the OR that the car is essential for your hospital trips and that public transport is not an option as you have a small child to take with you and that the only other option would be a taxi and that would cost more in the long run.
Try playing the sympathy card (the OR is human after all)
I know it's not a nice thing to think about losing the car but keep positive.

And before anyone else feels like being judgemental no I can't arrange all the appointments to be on the same day. I'm under three different consultants for three different issues because well we can't all pop babies out like they're peas and we don't all get a nice easy healthy pregnancy.
I just wanted advice on what sort of offers I should make to keep my car, I didn't ask for bitter twisted sad people who are so angry about their lives to give me grief over my car.
I thought this board was to get help and advice regarding bankruptcy, to learn from other people's experiences. I didn't realise it was for people who have nothing better to do with their lives than sit on a computer trying to pick a fight with people who are stressed out to their eye balls and give them s***.
I have been through the posts a few times, I cannot see this quote anywhere. All you have said is this.
We also really need the car as I am back and forth to the hospital every three - four weeks and where we live means having to get 2-3 buses each way depending on the time of day.
Basically they said 2-3 trips to hospital a month is not enough to qualify to keep the car so I have 14 days from now to make an offer to the official receiver to buy my car and keep it.
It's three trips a month which cost £14 each way, so that's £80 per month in taxis.
So where is it?
The problem is you want to keep your car and posters on here are not supporting you like you thought they would. You change your story every post.
I am not a sad twisted person, I went br nearly 5 years ago and now lead a happy and contended life.
It is you who has the problem.
Please as asked before, just how many visits to the hospital do you make each month?0 -
I am sorry you feel the help on this board is judgmental I can find no evidence of this. The help and support on here has been amazing for me and many others. Try to keep open minded to advice we are all here to help each other.
Just be honest and open with the o.r they are very fair. I wish you luck in the future x0 -
Correct me if i am wrong.
But even if you disregard her first comment, she states:
(Referring to her first comment about 2-3 appoints a month.).clearly says 2-3 appointments at a time.
So to me it appears your just trying to cause a problem when someone needs help?0 -

This board is nothing but helpful, and as a new member to the bankruptcy board I guess you at some point soon will need the help and advice some of the wonderful people. It was only a bit of clarification that was asked of the ladies first comment.

Deep breath love!! no one is on here to annoy, upset or judge you. no one is wanting to know why you have to go to the hospital nor is it anyone's business why you do. I understand you are stressed my biggest fear now in all of this is my car being taken as my childcare would go through the roof and my son goes to school 15mile from where I live.
I cant advise on how you go about buying the car I just hope you get it sorted and that when it is sorted you will be able to re-read the posts and see that people are only here to help with the question you put out there.BSC no.370 AD March 14

I would ask the OR to re-consider letting you keep your car, but make a token offer of £100 at the same time. Tell him that you will have to borrow this from someone as it is. Also calculate your full costs for running the car as pointed out above and give this to the OR together with the comparable travel costs via taxi.
You should also mention your husbands job hunting/prospects if you haven't done so already. I was fortunate enough to keep my car with no questions asked as I said I needed it to get to work. I know this isn't the same situation as yours, but I could have also used public transport to get to work. I believe that needing a car for work is the main reason accepted for keeping a vehicle through bankruptcy, but you could also remind the OR that you may need a car in case of an emergency through your pregnancy.
It may be worth getting your husband to sign up with an employment agency to show you're serious and tempt the OR with the fact that you would be able to increase your IPA/IPO contributions when your husband gets a better paid job.
I found the OR to be fairly reasonable, although no push-over.
Lastly, please try to take in only the positives from replies. I don't think anyone was being too judgemental, but can see how you may have perceived it as such. Bankruptcy is stressful enough as it is and that's the last thing you need during a difficult pregnancy.
Best of luck and let us know how you get on.0 -
The car is a 13 year old golf, body work not in great shape, few scrapes and bumps, rusty corners. But over the last five years I've owned this car I've spent a fortune on new parts and repairs so under the bonnet is a pretty new motor! I've checked it's worth to be around £600.
sadly, appearances are all with motors.
When you declared it as an asset, for your petition, how did you describe it?
I suggest you discover what [it might] fetch for scrap?
That is your starting point....or thereabouts [maybe circa 30% less?]
But firstly, gather all your evidence to support your argument for the OR to exempt your car as an asset.
You will need, evidence of taxi or public transport costs over one month, for your hospital appointments.
Also, this needs multiplying by the length of time you expect to have to attend these appointments, in the future.
Then calculate how much retaining your car will cost you, per month?
From experience, if looking for the car to come out cheaper, claim to 'do your own servicing'?
[However, if by doing so, one increases the likelihood of more surplus income, maybe quote for garage charges? Did I say that??]
Present this argument to the OR.
If the OR cannot be swayed over exemption, then you can start by making an offer to buy the OR's interest in the car...emphasis on its poor bodily condition, but that it is roadworthy [an important factor]...
You will come to a mutual agreement eventually.
The running costs can be taken out of the transportation costs from your SOA.
remember, approach this in a positive manner...you are not a victim! No, I don't think all other drivers are idiots......but some are determined to change my mind.......0 -
In my opinion I would go in with a very low offer and up it if needed.
Slightly different situation but they valued my car at £2000. I am an essential car user at work so need a car to do my job. They allow you to keep a car worth £1000 if you need it for work. They said that I could buy back the difference. There was no way I could afford £1000 so taking into account the cost of them selling my car at auction I offered £300.00. This was accepted and they agreed for me to pay them £100 per month for 3 months.
Hope that helps?0 -
I doubt they really want your car as it's worth so little; it's a point of principle. A 13 year old car which has poor bodywork is almost worthless - I would offer the equivalent scrap value as that's most likely what they'd do with it. Assuming they will negotiate if they don't like your offer, I would start at £100.0

or maybe even £50. What does webuyanycar offer?0
